As tomorrow's leaders and educators, our heritage will be the main-
tenance and promotion of friendly relations with our fellowman; the Thor-
obred staff has thus found it fitting to base the 1949 THOROBRED on
the theme "COMMON HERITAGE."
Every course which we have studied has instilled in us the foundations
of peace and good will toward man. Through History, Economics, Sci-
ence, Education, Business, and other studies we see that the people of
other nations are confronted with the same problems as we. Through
Art, Music and Literature, men of all nations have expressed themselves
the same as we fundamentally. Although language differs; the great
works of masters have been translated and universally accepted.
So, it is without a doubt, with so many people loving the same things,
that we in the world of tomorrow, with the background of tolerance and
goodwill instilled in us by our Alma Mater, we can be instrumental in bring-
ing a world peace. For this is our "COMMON HERITAGE."
We hope that the activities recorded herein are evidence of the
morals and standards of our Alma Mater. We further hope that this bit
of work will bring to its readers pleasant memories. It is the hope of the
editor that as you turn the pages of this book you will be able, through
this presentation, to sense those intrinsic values which have found tan-
gible expression, for us, in the buildings and individuals that color and
influence our lives here.
THE EDITOR
dedication
Because you have instilled in us a love for a strong
leader and a faithful servant; because you will
always be a vital part of our memories of K. S. C.
— we the class of June, 1949 dedicate this year
book to you, President R. B. Atwood.
ZJke Spirit ^Jkat Quiclzenetk
"Historic" Jackson Hall the oldest building on the campus is a symbol
of Thorobreds everywhere. The steadfastness with which this building has
stood, will always be a part of our spirit. It is a heritage every Thorobred
will carry with him in every phase of life. He will cherish forever the warm
and happy memories of Kentucky State College.

It is unnecessary to expound the idea that these are troubled times in
which we live. The many outside sources of trouble and confusion are
quite evident. But it is necessary for me to say to you that the funda-
mental eause of this trouble and confusion is the lack of internal stability
and anchorage. Without religion we are not likely to emerge from this
confusion and trouble. Religion strangely enough does two things at once;
it lifts one out of himself and it reinforces one in himself. It directs atten-
tion toward Sod and toward other people and new centers of interest
develop.

THE KAPPA ALPHA PSI SWEETHEART
KAPPA SWEETHEART SONG
You're as pretty as a picture
And as sweet as you can be.
I love you so sincerely;
You're all the world to me;
And if ever I should lose you,
It would surely break my heart.
For I love you; I adore you;
You're my Kappa Alpha Psi Sweetheart.
You're fairer than the fairest;
I have loved you all the while.
I know you're my Kappa darling,
For you have that Kappa style.
Faith should never let me leave you;

The Kentucky State College is the result of an act passed by the
General Assembly of Kentucky in 1886. This act established the State
Normal School for Colored Persons and was approved by Governor J.
Proctor Knott on the 1 8th day of May in the same year. The city of
Frankfort, through its council, donated $1,500.00 for a site. Since that
day that site has been locally known as "Normal Hill."
The next year, 1 887, Jackson Hall, containing four rooms and a chapel,
was erected. John H. Jackson, A.M., from Berea College, was elected
as first president. The school opened its doors on October I I with three
teachers, and before the school year ended there were enrolled fifty-five
students.
During the last decade of the 19th century the school witnessed
many changes. In 1890 there were added the departments of Home
Economics, Agriculture and Mechanics. In the spring of this year the
school turned out its first graduates, a class of five. In 1893 there was
organized a High School department. In 1897 a farm of 265 acres was
purchased for the Agricultural Department. This expansion continued in
the 20th century, both in name and program.
In 1902 the name was changed to "Kentucky Normal and Industrial
Institute for Colored Persons," and the president was made an ex officio
member of the Board of Trustees.
Kentucky State College is situated about three hundred feet beyond
the city limits of Frankfort, on a beautiful hill overlooking the city. Its
campus consists of about thirty-five acres of choice bluegrass land, adjoins
the campus.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad, carrying not only its own trains,
but those of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company, passes through
this farm.
The U. S. Highway No. 60 passes between the campus and farm,
forming a dividing line between them. Entrances to both campus and
farm are located on this thoroughfare.

Without religion we are not likely to emerge from this
confusion and trouble. Religion strangely enough does two things at once;
it lifts one out of himself and it reinforces one in himself. It directs atten-

"Historic" Jackson Hall the oldest building on the campus is a symbol
of Thorobreds everywhere. The steadfastness with which this building has
stood, will always be a part of our spirit. It is a heritage every Thorobred

It is unnecessary to expound the idea that these are troubled times in
which we live. The many outside sources of trouble and confusion are
quite evident. But it is necessary for me to say to you that the funda-
mental eause of this trouble and confusion is the lack of internal stability
and anchorage. Without religion we are not likely to emerge from this
confusion and trouble. Religion strangely enough does two things at once;
it lifts one out of himself and it reinforces one in himself. It directs atten-
tion toward Sod and toward other people and new centers of interest
develop.
